Best of 2023: Films

It was quite difficult to narrow this one down — I swear, movies are getting better and better. But without further ado, here are my top 3 favorites of the films I watched in 2023. Each comes highly recommended.

The Lesson

A literary-world thriller that follows Liam, an ambitious young writer, who accepts a position as a tutor for the son of his idol, author JM Sinclair. As he spends time with the family, Liam quickly becomes ensnared in a dark web of family secrets and long-bubbling resentment, culminating in an explosive ending for both Liam and the Sinclair family.

Triangle of Sadness

The film kicks off with Carl and Yaya, two models/influencers, receiving an invitation for a luxury cruise ship. They’re accompanied by a group of other similarly out-of-touch wealthy people and catered to throughout the journey by a large staff. When a brutal tropical storm hits the ship, the strict social system begins to collapse and true natures emerge.

Other People’s Children

Other People’s Children is a 2022 French film that tells the story of Rachel, a middle-aged teacher who starts a new relationship. As she falls in love with Ali, Rachel also grows close with his four-year-old daughter. As the relationship deepens, Rachel must wrestle with her role in Leila’s life and the increasingly time-sensitive decision to have a child of her own.
